denigrate these bold young men to the stature of mere prison reformers is heinous. A good movie, though. I like that the moviemakers remembered that Cossette is a brunette, at least when she is older. Four stars because black-and-white renditions of classic novels are usually very good. (try A Tale of Two Cities if you liked the book)

I've watched this movie probably 20 times ... over the years on VHS and now it's been several years and I found this - I can't thank you enough for posting such a nice clean print of it, I'll bookmark and watch again. My face is soaked with tears. Again. Thanks.

I admit I am somewhat obsessed with this Novel and series of films, and by far, this is my favorite of the lot. Charles Laughton is so incredibly believable
...
as Javert, literally breathing and seething hatred for ValJean. His character is consumed by this need, and I won't go into the psychology of that, to battle corruption and crime of any nature how small and to obey the letter of the law. Never diviating from his purpose in life, now matter how blind that is.
A true classic in every sense.
